Izzalini is a small feudal “borgo” perched in the Umbrian hills just minutes away from Todi. It is tethered to its 12th century Castello, one of the many defensive castles built to alert and protect Todi from invaders.

Two artistic women saw potential in the ancient walls. One, a friend, discovered them and visualized what could be recreated, a practical living space in the traditional Umbrian style. The other, an architect, made certain that the medieval shapes and feeling were retained to achieve a sense of the old world and modern comfort. Her comment: “The present is part of the history.”

Restored and up-dated, the Castello evokes its origin. The vaulted master bedroom in the castleʼs tower is reached by an ancient stairway from the living area. Windows look out on a spectacular vista of Umbrian landscape, fields of wheat, olive trees and sunflowers against a backdrop of hills, woods and hilltown villages. Scenes bathed in light that changes with the time of day, the time of year, are reminiscent of works by Renaissance masters who painted here. All this creates an ideal place to reflect, to explore, to sketch, to read, to write.....for reverie.

The Castello invites the thoughtful visitor, a family, couples, or any group up to 6 people, who are interested in exploring Central Italy or those who prefer savoring the quiet tranquility of the Umbrian countryside.
